On much-traveled 34th St. N. near Central Ave., St. Petersburg, there is one very busy enterprise that attracts more than shoppers. It’s a destination for those in dire need of some of the necessities of life and for those who, through their generosity, donate the very items needed.
Our Thrift Store, open six days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., is a 10,000 square-foot resource for those with little or no clothing, bedding, furniture and other household items, who have been referred by the 12 Conferences of the District and other social service agencies such as Catholic Charities and DayStar.
Each year these impoverished clients, given merchandise free of charge, number in the thousands. They may be the man just released from prison with the only shirt he owns is the one on his back; or the single mom whose three little ones share her bed; or the couple just off the streets who have found a small unfurnished apartment and need a table or chairs, or the unemployed wage-earner who must have clothes for his children to go to school.
A caring staff and volunteers help satisfy their needs from a constantly changing inventory, thanks to the people of the community who deliver donations to our intake area where they are sorted and selected for suitability before reaching the sales floor. For furniture and heavier items, our trucks are on the road from Monday through Friday making pick-ups in certain areas on certain days.
A godsend to the indigent and an affordable option for cost-conscious consumers who find exceptional merchandise at reduced prices, that’s our Thrift Store.
